What is the Process of Steel Fabrication for Building Specialties?
Steel is one of, if not the most widely used materials in the construction industry. Thanks to its malleability and aesthetic qualities, it’s especially popular when it comes to building specialties, such as flagpoles, handrails, and more. We will explain the fabrication process that steel goes through when it’s used in these instances.

Cutting and Punching
The first step in steel fabrication for building specialties is to cut or punch the piece of steel you plan to use. Cutting is done with shearers, tin snips, or industrial-grade steel cutters operated manually or through robotics.
Punching, on the other hand, is when a flat piece of steel is laid on a surface, and a mold is slammed down on top of it with enough force to cut out a section of the steel. The process is similar to using cookie cutters to cut Christmas cookies.
Bending
Next, the section of steel is bent, twisted, and turned until it’s the right shape for your needs. Steel is extremely flexible and malleable, but it must often be heated up to achieve enough bendability.
Welding
In most instances of building specialties, you will need to join two or more pieces of steel together. This is done through welding or soldering, and requires a professional touch.
Joining
In addition to joining multiple pieces of metal together, you may also want to join metal with another material that isn’t weldable. If so, we will use the appropriate fasteners and methods to join metal with whatever you desire.
Surface Treatment
After you product is assembled and ready to go, you may need to apply a surface treatment, such as a finish or sheen. Surface treatment is done both for aesthetic reasons as well as to help the steel hold up against damaging elements.
Final Inspection
Once your building specialties product is completed and ready for rollout, it will undergo a final quality control inspection. This will help identify any defects, issues, or blemishes with your product. The final inspection checks for both aesthetic issues as well as structural or functional ones.
